In this post, we will learn how to start making future tense statements so we can talk about the things we are going to do, such as “I will buy the coffee” or “We will clean the kitchen.” To make future tense sentences in Chamorro, we need to use future tense markers and learn which hu type pronouns they are paired with. During our morning practice group this past Saturday, we talked about applying the man- prefix. There are several applications of the man- prefix, and there are slightly different ways to understand how and why it’s applied depending upon if it is applied to transitive verbs, intransitive verbs, nouns, or pronouns. It can get pretty confusing! I’ll be doing a mini-series about the man- prefix and how it is applied to different types of words. In this post I’ll be exploring the application of the man- prefix to transitive verbs and laying out my own systematic way of understanding this prefix.

In this post we will learn how to add locations to our action sentences so we can say things like “I drank the coffee at the restaurant” or “I am buying the mangoes at the market.” In Chamorro, locations are marked with either gi or giya, and we will learn how to use them in this post. Once you learn how to use gi and giya, you will be able to add them to any sentence in Chamorro. Happy studying!

Now we will learn how to say sentences in the present tense or continuous tense so we can say things like “I am drinking the coffee.” In this post, the main concept we will learn about is called reduplication, and we will apply this to our transitive verb to move our sentences into the present tense.
