Estorian Luta: The Squeaky Cart

Our Saturday morning practice group will be reading a short story this week. This is a story from the island of Luta, about a cart that is sometimes seen and heard at night. It has some spooky vibes, which is perfect for the end of October. This post includes the Chamorro text, an English translation, and a Chamorro audio narration by Jay Che’le. Happy reading! (Updated 11/2/2024: Added footnotes on select words and phrases to highlight the main discussion points from our practice group session.)

Estorian Taotaomo’na: Si Tangulu

Here is a taotaomo’na story from Luta about a taotaomo’na named Tangulu, which literally translates to “skull”. It’s a combination of the words to’lang (which means “bone”) and ulu (which means “head”). Have any of you heard of Tangulu? This story was completely brand new for me, so I’m excited for us to read this in our Saturday morning praktika this week.

This post includes the Chamorro text, English translation, and Chamorro narration by Jay Che’le. Happy reading!

The Girl Who Turned Into Ash

Here is a Chamorro story about a girl named Rita who turned into ash. In this story we read a cautionary tale about making sure we understand what is actually important in life. Our actions ultimately reveal what we hold dear, and sometimes it can be too late to take things back once they have been said or done.

This post includes the Chamorro text, a Chamorro audio narration by Jay Che’le, and an English translation. Happy reading!

The Ugly Witch

I’ve been trawling the internet again in search of Chamorro stories, and I found this story from a collection that was published in Luta in 1976 (details below). In this story we learn why in Luta, sewing at nighttime is considered a bad thing to do.

This post includes the Chamorro text, an English translation, Chamorro audio narration, and two Quizlet flashcard study decks. The is narration is done by Jay Che’le, hope you enjoy it!
