This story was written by Magdelena Iguel Lieto, where she tells the story, as told to her by her elders, of how their people (the Carolinians) came to Saipan. This is a Chamorro retelling of a Japanese story, about an elderly couple who are kind to a lost young girl. We found this story in the Pacific Languages Collection at UH Manoa, when we visited the university during FestPac back in June. This week we will be reading a story from Kosrae, which we found in the KPV Collection and was translated into Chamorro by Dolores Marciano. This story is set on Lellu or Lelu, which is home to an ancient city built from coral and basalt and was ruled by a monarchy – how awe-inspiring! Continuing our theme of reading stories from other Pacific Islands, here is a story from Palau that was translated by Dolores Marciano that we found in the Pacific Languages Collection at UH Manoa. This story reminds us that the relationships nurtured between parents and children are more important than superficial concerns. Jay did his best with the pronunciation of the place names from Palau in the story, so our apologies if they aren’t 100% correct! HÃ¥fa adai! It has been a quieter than usual on the blog these past few weeks, mostly due to me being frequently unwell. I’ve been trying to rest more, but I’ve missed posting on the blog. Jay and I are also on vacation for most of June, so it may be continue to be quieter than usual until July. But I will try to post when I can. Enjoy summer and take care of yourselves 🙂
In this post is a Chamorro story that our Saturday morning practice group read and translated a few Saturdays ago. Jay had an unexpected business trip that week and was unable to record the narration ahead of time. So he ended up reading the story live to the group. This is a fun (and long) story that is a Chamorro retelling, by Dolores Marciano, of a folktale from Thailand.
