This is a legend I found on Påle’ Eric’s blog about why the fanihi (fruitbat) doesn’t have friends. I enjoyed this legend, and had never heard any story about the fruitbat before reading this one. We used this story during one of our practice sessions, and Jay Che’le recorded the narration because this was one of Påle’s older posts that didn’t have audio. I’ve also included the Chamorro and English in this post for reading along with the audio. Hope you enjoy it!
Here is the legend of Alupang Rock, written by Simon Camacho. We have been reading and translating Chamorro stories during one of our practice groups, and we did this one a couple months back. The Chamorro text, a Chamorro audio narration by Jay Che’le, and an English translation are in this post. The original illustrations were done by Rogelio G. Do you like reading web comics? I love reading web comics, and especially now with all the variety of art styles and stories. I found this comic on Catapult, written and illustrated by Shing Yin Khor. For fun and to flex our translation muscles, Jay and I translated it into Chamorro. There may be some errors in our translation, but hopefully you enjoy reading it, as we really enjoyed translating it into our language. We’ve also included the audio narration in Chamorro to help with listening and reading practice. I received the New Testament in Chamorro last January. But when I received it, I couldn’t read it because all of its writing was beyond my level of comprehension. But I tried to read it again during Christmas, and I can now read and understand a lot! I would like to translate the verses about love from 1 Corinthians, because it is well known and very beautiful. This post includes the Chamorro text, an English translation and an audio narration by Schyuler Lujan of 1 Corinthians, Chapter 13, from the Nuebu Testamento out of Saipan from the late Bishop Tomas A.
