Although it is now officially an illegal activity, cockfighting was a fixture of Chamorro culture up until it was banned in the U.S. territories just a few years ago. I’ve never been to a cockfight, but it was part of Jay’s childhood growing up on Guam in the nineties. In this song we get to hear about cockfighting in Chamorro culture, including some name drops of favored rooster breeds for the fighting pit. A wedding day is a celebration of love, commitment, and the promises made between two people. This heartfelt song by Daniel De Leon Guerrero captures that moment in the Chamorro language. Our Saturday evening practice group transcribed this song together last night, and while the slower pace made us expect an easier listening comprehension exercise, there were still words here and there that were tricky to catch. Our Saturday evening practice group is still making our way through some of Siñot Danny’s songs, and last night we listened to Masi, which is about how when times were hard on Guam, people would be collecting scrap metal for money. Jay actually remembered what it was like in the 2000s on the island, and he especially remembered when brass plaques would be stolen off of the monuments. This past Saturday, our evening practice group didn’t meet because Jay was at a conference, so I transcribed this song during a solo study session. This past Saturday our evening practice group welcomed a new member, so we made him choose the song. He ended up choosing Manmenhalom by Daniel De Leon Guerrero, which is an energetic song conveying deep pride in being Chamorro. This one is on the slightly faster side, but everyone did such a great job when it was their turn to listen and transcribe the lyrics. This more recent recording from Dåndan Marianas is a really nice acoustic version, which makes it great for learners.
