As lifelong learners of the Chamorro language ourselves, we’ve come to understand that how we learn is just as important as what we learn. As we continue on our own path, we do our best to support others along theirs. With this perspective, we approach our practice groups and this website with intention, grounding our work in several core values:
Anyone Can Learn Chamorro
We believe that everyone can learn to understand and speak Chamorro, regardless of age, place, or experience. Each of our paths is different, but we all need the same things to be successful: consistency, encouragement, and access to supportive resources. Our mission is to ensure that anyone, anywhere can begin and continue their own journey of learning our language.
Meaningful Progress in Real-Time
We believe that no one should settle for the myth that learning Chamorro must be inaccessible or take decades before meaningful use is possible. We prioritize consistency over intensity and showing up over perfection. With a solid foundation and the right tools, learners can begin having small but meaningful conversations in real time, building confidence step by step as their abilities grow.
Rooted in Natural Language Patterns
We believe that natural language patterns are more effective tools for learners than technical grammar rules and linguistic analyses. We have deep gratitude for the work done to document and study our language. Our role is to make the structure and flavor of Chamorro accessible and understandable, helping learners recognize patterns they can use in real communication, regardless of their background.
Orienting Toward a Chamorro Language Worldview
We believe that the Chamorro language carries its own worldview—its own ways of understanding, organizing, and expressing meaning that differ deeply from English. Embracing our mother tongue means learning to meet Chamorro on its own terms, appreciating its unique beauty and complexity rather than reshaping it to fit English patterns of thought. We recognize that this can be challenging, especially for learners shaped by English, but we also believe that learners are fully capable of growing into new ways of thinking through language.
Honoring Elders & Native Speakers
We believe that our native and fluent speakers are the strongest foundation for preserving and carrying forward authentic language patterns. We emphasize stories, songs, and lived language that showcases a depth and breadth that can only come from decades of living language. We honor and emphasize the role that speakers have in our communities. Our hope is to amplify and encourage their presence in the journey of each learner, so that we can all receive as much as our speakers are willing to offer.
Accessibility and Scale
We recognize an urgency to help learners reach basic speaking ability so they can interact with speakers in their lives and communities today. Time works against our language’s prospects for survival, and this motivates us to build learning materials that are accessible, scalable, and lasting. Expanding access to language learning is not simply a matter of convenience—it is part of sustaining the living future of Chamorro.
These principles guide how we teach, how we learn, and how we contribute to the living future of the Chamorro language.
